Service Opportunities
We have several teams that strive to give back to the community in which we live and work.
Join one of our service teams!
Justice Team
Our Justice Team collaborates with other advocacy groups and nonprofits to plan events, rallies, and other gatherings to support advocacy efforts like:
Registering people to vote
Immigration and DACA rights
Petition signing for healthcare expansion or elevating minimum wages
Writing letters to political leaders
Downtown Clean-Up Team
With our partners at the Downtown Improvement District, Keep Omaha Beautiful and the Old Market Association, we organize community cleanups that keep our district clean, safe, and welcoming to everyone from every corner of life.
Once a month or more we gather to clean up, connect to our neighbors and sometimes we even share water on a hot day.
Liberty Elementary Team
We are passionate about public education, and we are passionate about our neighborhood school. You can help with our efforts by:
Planning the annual mac and cheese fundraising event
Providing support and encouragement to teachers with notes, coffee and tea, treats, etc.
Reading to children after school
Directing traffic as kids leave for and return from field trips
Encouraging students with first-day high fives

Note: All adults must pass a background check and follow OPS training protocols to volunteer through us!
Hospitality Team
Our hospitality team works behind the coffee bar alongside staff, helping with the day-to-day Abbey operations and on special days, like the Farmer’s Market in the summer!
Some of the things we do on the hospitality team:
Help support staff by running out Point of Sale
Greeting customers at the door and helping them with whatever they need!
Help maintain the Abbey! Spruce up our bookshelves and keep our space clean!
Crowd management at big events or busy days, like the Farmer’s Market
Pastoral Care Team
Our Pastoral Care team is about presence. This is about sitting with a person in the hard spaces, supporting, listening, asking questions to invite further reflection, and praying if they want you to and for God’s sake not offering a single cliché or trying to fix it.
Pastoral care is the work of the whole people of the church and we are called to hear one another, care for one another and stand beside one another. We do this work after worship services, in hospital rooms, in moments of crisis and over cups of coffee. The pastoral Care team meets for training and leadership development as a launch team, lead by lay leaders.
Sunday Work Teams
We are our busiest on Sundays! Here’s some ways you can get involved for worship:
Welcome Team: Welcoming folks to worship, connecting, learning names.
Hospitality Team: Resetting room to welcome new folks (putting away chairs, collecting papers, moving tables). Sweeping. Doing dishes.
Stewardship Team: Count offering after worship and fill out Urban Abbey counting sheet.
Just 4 hours a week can make a huge difference
As part of your spiritual journey with the Abbey, we invite you to think about how you can invest time and energy into making the world a better place. A simple place to start is by investing four hours in your spiritual growth:
1 hour communal worship as a renewal of spirt
1 hour with a small group
1 hour of meditation
1 hour of service in the community
