Our Mission

We believe the world should be different, and so we are a space of radical hospitality connecting people to God and one another in everyday life.

Values that guide us along our journey

Coffee = Hospitality

Hospitality is the heart of our faith and it is the heart of our work. From local milk to reclaimed wood tables, whether for worship or the Farmers Market, we welcome everyone just as they are; for coffee, tea, communion, events or just a space to relax and breathe.

Cause = Generosity

We believe that to explore generosity we must practice it. It is risky, but we give 10% of our coffee bar sales to local nonprofits. We start with listening to our partners,  and we show up with and for each other. Together we can do more, every gift and event and effort and every cup of coffee gets us closer to making “earth as it is in heaven.”

Communion = Connection

When we see one another as sacred, we treat one another as sacred. That’s what we do as we reach out to our community from a place of deep faith. We connect with God, so we see as God sees and love as God loves. We want to build authentic relationships and a compassionate community.

Meet Rev. Debra

Rev. Debra McKnight is the founding pastor of Urban Abbey. Under her leadership, the Abbey has become a place to explore diverse perspectives and push boundaries in the church’s traditional structures.

Why be a coffee shop/bookstore/United Methodist church?

A coffee shop is simply the modern-day watering well … a hub where people have gathered since before Jesus was born, to laugh, share, and connect in meaningful ways.

The Urban Abbey coffee shop is just that — a gathering place to come together as a community … with the added benefit of being able to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee and tasty snack.

The bookstore offers an opportunity for all of us to learn and grow, whether the topic is spirituality, social justice, or LGBTQ+ empowerment.
