Our Mission

We believe the world should be different, and so we are a space of radical hospitality connecting people to God and one another in everyday life.

Values that guide us along our journey

Coffee = Hospitality

Hospitality is creating a space of warmth and belonging, where everyone is included and welcome to be their authentic self. It is focusing on how we can support them as they grow.

Cause = Generosity

Generosity is more than donating 10% of coffee bar sales every month. It is being a voice for others in order to challenge the status quo, enact real change, and ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Communion = Connection

A church isn’t a building. It is a community formed by deep connections with God and each other. We connect with others by being present, nurturing the human spirit, and welcoming everyone.

Urban Abbey Rev. Debra McKnight

Meet Rev. Debra

Rev. Debra McKnight is the founding pastor of Urban Abbey. Under her leadership, the Abbey has become a place to explore diverse perspectives and push boundaries in the church’s traditional structures.

Why be a coffee shop/bookstore/United Methodist church?

A coffee shop is simply the modern-day watering well … a hub where people have gathered since before Jesus was born, to laugh, share, and connect in meaningful ways.

The Urban Abbey coffee shop is just that — a gathering place to come together as a community … with the added benefit of being able to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee and tasty snack.

The bookstore offers an opportunity for all of us to learn and grow, whether the topic is spirituality, social justice, or LGBTQ+ empowerment.
